A switch is a networking device that connects multiple devices within a network, such as a local area network (LAN), and forwards data packets between them. Unlike a router, which connects different networks and forwards data across them, a switch only sends data to the specific device it is intended for. This ensures efficient and secure communication by transmitting data only to the relevant device based on its address. Switches operate at the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) or the Network Layer (Layer 3) of the OSI model, enabling them to manage and direct data flow within a network.
